The tale of a carpet made by a talented weaver is a timeless story of artisanship, tradition and divine art in a world of fast fashion and unskilled machine-made products. At Yak Carpet, every handknotted carpet is not merely a floor covering; it is the work of love, a representation of a culture that has much to offer, a months and even years-long process.
From Concept to Creation
Growth takes a starting point. Even before a knot is tied, at the Yak Carpet, designers collaborate closely with master weavers and craft elaborate designs. The designs are traditionally based on centuries-old Persian, Turkish, or Indian designs and modern styles that would fit any interior space. All the designs are critically charted down into a graph, commonly referred to as a naksha, which serves as a guide to the weavers.
Selecting the Right Materials
Only the highest grades of natural fibers are taken. Weavers work with pure silk, New Zealand wool, or a mix and more commonly desired materials. At Yak Carpet, environmental and ethically obtained materials are a priority. The fibers are subsequently dyed with natural and AZO-free dyes to make them rich, long-lasting colours without fading over time.
The Art of Hand-Knotting
It is here that the magic is done. Experienced weavers use a vertical loom and knot thousands of stitches (by hand, one by one) using knots. Every knot is a sign of accuracy. An 8’x10’ ft. rug, the standard one, will take the maker 8 to 12 months (depending on the complexity of designs and density of knots). Contrary to machine-produced rugs, all handknotted rugs produced by Yak Carpet include slight imperfections, which enhance individuality and beauty.
Washing and Finishing
After finishing weaving, the rug will undergo a careful stage of washing, clipping and stretching. When in the washing process, the colours are really brought out and the fibres are relaxed, and in the clipping, the pile height will be made even. This is then sun-dried and followed up by final checks to ensure maximum quality.
A Story Woven in Every Thread
A handmade rug is special because of what it tells. Each Yak Carpet will be a piece of the legacy of the carpet weaver that produced the piece, who, in many cases, has used traditions that have been passed down over generations. The history, humanity, and touch of a rug are immense, as it makes a trip through a weaver village all the way to the place where you sit in your living room.
